Miranda Goad

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Short-term Fellow: April - June 2024
Mentored by Dr. Richard Nemeth, University of the Virgin Islands

As a first-generation college student, Miranda’s academic and professional journey has been significantly shaped by support from programs such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) SEAS Island Alliance and the Navigating Home Fellowships. During her undergraduate studies at the University of the Virgin Islands, she gained invaluable exposure to marine science research through internships and conferences supported by the Grimes Lab. Recognizing her passion for fish and elasmobranch ecology, Dr. Grimes invited her to continue this work through the Navigating Home Fellowship after she earned her bachelor's degree. Under Dr. Grimes’ mentorship, Miranda had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Rick Nemeth on parrotfish life cycle research, further deepening her expertise and strengthening her commitment to the field.

The Navigating Home Fellowship provided Miranda with hands-on experience in marine research, equipping her with essential skills in data collection and science communication. It also enabled her to build meaningful professional connections—one of which led to her current advisor, who is now guiding her master’s research on nursery habitats for juvenile sharks and rays.

In addition to academic and professional development, these fellowships offered the financial and mentorship support necessary for Miranda to overcome barriers and pursue her career goals with confidence. Without the guidance and resources provided by the Securing STEM Island Pathways and Navigating Home programs, pursuing a master’s degree would not have been possible. These opportunities have not only solidified her passion for marine science but have also fundamentally shaped her future, empowering her to contribute meaningfully to the field.
