Mentored by:
Elizabeth DeGrange, Guam Environmental Protection Agency

Miguel Cordero, born and raised in Dededo, channels his love for science into making a real difference in his community through his fellowship with NSF Navigating Home. After earning a biology degree from St. John’s University and a master’s in biotechnology from Northeastern University, Cordero returned to Guam with a clear goal: to apply his scientific skills to protect the environment and public health.

As a Navigating Home fellow, Cordero joined Guam EPA’s Environmental Monitoring and Analytical Services (EMAS) division, where he works actively in both the field and the lab. He monitors beach waters for bacterial contamination, runs advanced molecular tests like PCR, and expands the lab’s services to track the sources of fecal contamination. His work helps the island manage water quality and keeps residents safe. Cordero also shares these results with the public through Guam EPA’s Beach Report, ensuring everyone stays informed.

Navigating Home has offered Cordero more than lab experience. The program connects him with local STEM professionals, teaches him the fundamentals of environmental science, and enables him to give back to his community. His work demonstrates how the program attracts and retains talented young people on the island while supporting Guam’s future in science and public service.
