Katelyn Anderson's participation in the Guam NSF Navigating Home Program at the Guam Department of Agriculture exemplifies the transformative power of hands-on, community-based research. As a fellow, Katelyn was tasked with contributing to projects vital to the island's environmental sustainability, allowing her to apply her academic knowledge to real-world challenges.

Growing up on Guam, Anderson knew that whatever road she traveled down in her life and career, she wanted to give back to her island and make it a better place for future generations.

During her time at the Department of Agriculture, Katelyn's work focused on different areas of conservation including native species protection, invasive species removal, forestry and more, which not only provided her with invaluable field experience but also directly contributed to ongoing conservation efforts. This practical application of her studies helped her bridge the gap between theoretical concepts learned in the classroom and the practical realities of scientific research and public service.

“Being a part of the Navigating Home Early Career Program has given me the opportunity to come back home and share my knowledge with my people. Seeing my family and living our lives together while I continue to advance professionally is a dream come true.”

The mentorship provided through the program was a cornerstone of her experience. Working alongside seasoned professionals, she developed critical skills in data collection, scientific reporting, and inter-agency collaboration. This experience not only solidified her career aspirations in environmental science but also instilled in her a deeper sense of responsibility toward her community. Katelyn's journey is a powerful example of how the Guam NSF Navigating Home Program empowers the next generation of leaders to address critical issues and make a lasting impact on Guam.
